📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study examines the relationship between performance appraisal systems and employee development in the Nigerian insurance industry, with specific reference to selected insurance companies in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. Performance appraisal is a fundamental human resource management function that links individual performance with organisational development goals. This research employs a descriptive survey design with 100 employees drawn from five insurance firms. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analysed through descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation. The study investigates appraisal dimensions including appraisal frequency, feedback quality, objectivity of assessment criteria, and linkage to training and promotion decisions. Results indicate that feedback quality and linkage to training decisions are the strongest predictors of perceived employee development outcomes. Respondents reported moderate satisfaction with appraisal frequency but significant concerns about the objectivity of assessment processes, suggesting potential bias in managerial evaluations. The study further finds that where appraisal outcomes are directly linked to development opportunities, employees demonstrate higher engagement and career progression satisfaction. These findings align with contemporary HR development literature advocating for appraisal-training integration. Recommendations include training appraisers in bias reduction, institutionalising 360-degree feedback mechanisms, and ensuring transparent communication of appraisal criteria. Keywords: performance appraisal, employee development, insurance industry, Abuja, human resource management.
