Organisational Learning and Adaptability in Nigerian Agribusiness Firms in Benue State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study investigates the relationship between organisational learning practices and business adaptability in agribusiness firms operating in Benue State, the agricultural heartland of Nigeria's North Central geopolitical zone. Benue's strategic importance as a major food-producing state creates a dynamic and challenging business environment in which adaptability is essential for agribusiness survival and growth amid climate variability, market fluctuations, and logistical constraints. This research employs a descriptive survey design with data collected from 100 agribusiness managers, extension officers, and enterprise supervisors through structured questionnaires. Analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. The study evaluates organisational learning dimensions including single-loop learning processes, double-loop learning culture, knowledge transfer mechanisms, learning from failure practices, and external environment scanning. Results reveal that double-loop learning culture and external environment scanning show the strongest positive associations with business adaptability indicators including market repositioning speed, product diversification capacity, and supply chain resilience. Single-loop learning practices, while prevalent, were associated with incremental rather than transformative adaptation. The study recommends that agribusiness firms in Benue State invest in structured learning reviews after major operational disruptions, develop knowledge-sharing platforms, and establish cross-functional adaptation teams. Keywords: organisational learning, adaptability, agribusiness, Benue State, learning culture.
