The Role of Social Workers in Elderly Care in Anambra State, South East Nigeria

Nigeria's ageing population is increasingly confronting inadequate care systems, particularly in regions where urbanisation has disrupted traditional family support networks. This study examines the role of social workers in elderly care in Anambra State, focusing on communities in Onitsha, Awka, and Nnewi. Using a descriptive research design, data are collected from 80 social workers, elderly persons, and their primary caregivers through structured questionnaires and observation checklists. Descriptive statistics are applied in data analysis. The study reveals that elderly persons in Anambra State face challenges including abandonment, poverty, poor access to healthcare, and social isolation, particularly those living alone after adult children migrate to urban centres or abroad. Social workers employed by community health institutions and government welfare units play a limited but significant role in home visits, pension claim assistance, and referral for health services. However, the number of trained social workers specifically working with elderly clients is described as grossly insufficient. Cultural expectations that families bear sole responsibility for elderly care also reduce government investment in eldercare infrastructure. Recommendations include the development of formal geriatric social work specialisation within university curricula, the creation of government-funded community day-care centres for elderly persons, and awareness campaigns encouraging multi-generational care cooperation.
