Gender-Based Violence and Social Work Response in Nasarawa State, North Central Nigeria

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Gender-based violence is a systemic manifestation of structural inequality and a major barrier to women's health, autonomy, and social participation. This study examines gender-based violence patterns and social work response mechanisms in Nasarawa State, focusing on Lafia and Akwanga local government areas. A descriptive survey design is employed, with data collected from 90 GBV survivors, social workers, and community leaders through structured questionnaires and interview guides. Frequencies, percentages, and chi-square analysis are employed in data processing. The study finds that physical violence within intimate relationships, sexual assault, and economic control are the most frequently reported forms of gender-based violence in the communities studied. Social workers conduct risk assessments, safety planning, counselling, and shelter referrals for GBV survivors. However, limited shelter facilities, inadequate police cooperation, and survivor fear of community backlash frequently impede the effectiveness of interventions. Recommendations include establishing dedicated GBV response centres in each local government area, training social workers in trauma-informed interviewing techniques, strengthening coordination with law enforcement and legal aid services, and promoting community-level accountability mechanisms for preventing gender-based violence. Keywords: gender-based violence, social work, Nasarawa State, trauma-informed care, women's rights
