Evaluation of Software Testing Automation Frameworks in Nigerian Banking Applications

The reliability and security of banking application software in Nigeria directly affect millions of customers and carry significant regulatory implications under the Central Bank of Nigeria's IT standards. This study evaluates the adoption and effectiveness of software testing automation frameworks in Nigerian banking applications, focusing on institutions in Lagos and Abuja. A structured survey was administered to 40 software testers and QA managers across eight banks, supplemented by tool performance benchmarking across three candidate frameworks: Selenium, Cypress, and Appium. Evaluation criteria include test coverage breadth, execution speed, integration with CI/CD pipelines, and maintenance overhead. Findings show that Selenium remains the most widely adopted framework, used by 72 percent of surveyed banks, though its maintenance overhead is consistently cited as a limitation. Cypress demonstrates stronger performance in modern single-page application testing but faces integration challenges with legacy banking frontends. The study identifies the absence of dedicated test automation engineering roles as a structural barrier to testing maturity, with many banks assigning automation as a secondary responsibility to manual testers. Professional recommendations include establishing test automation competency centres within bank IT divisions and adopting risk-based test selection strategies to maximise automation return on investment.
