The Historical Origins and Contemporary Dynamics of Ethnic Identity Politics in South-South Nigeria: An Original Integrative Framework

This dissertation develops an original integrative framework for analysing the historical origins and contemporary dynamics of ethnic identity politics in Nigeria's South South geopolitical zone, encompassing Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Edo States. The South South zone presents a distinctive case for ethnic identity analysis: its extraordinary ethnic diversity, including over 40 distinct linguistic groups; its experience of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, colonial administrative grouping, and post-independence political marginalisation as a minority region; and its position at the centre of Nigeria's oil economy have all shaped an ethnic identity politics of unusual complexity and intensity. The dissertation employs a three-phase mixed-methods design: systematic historical reconstruction of ethnic identity formation in the South South from pre-colonial political organisation through colonial administrative ethnogenesis to contemporary electoral politics, drawing on archival sources, oral histories with 45 elderly informants, and secondary historical literature; a quantitative panel analysis of ethnic voting patterns and political violence incidents from 1999 to 2023; and 65 qualitative interviews with political leaders, community elders, and civil society advocates across the six states. The Ethnic Constructivism Theory, the Historical Institutionalism Framework, and the Political Economy of Ethnicity by Posner jointly provide the theoretical anchors. The dissertation proposes the South South Ethnic Politics Integrative Model, tracing how colonial administrative constructs, oil resource competition, and democratic electoral incentives have jointly produced the contemporary pattern of sub-ethnic political mobilisation in the zone.
