Professional Design of a Soil Health Monitoring Programme for Commercial Farms in Kaduna State, North West Nigeria

This study develops a professional soil health monitoring programme design for large-scale commercial farms in Kaduna State, located in Nigeria's North West geopolitical zone. Commercial farming has expanded significantly in Kaduna State, particularly for maize, wheat, and soybean, but systematic long-term soil health monitoring protocols have not been established for the commercial farming sector, creating gaps in sustainability accountability and early warning of soil degradation. Using a professional programme design methodology, soil health monitoring frameworks from the FAO, Commonwealth Agricultural Bureau International, and the Rodale Institute were reviewed and adapted for the Kaduna State agroecological context. Nine large-scale commercial farms in Zaria, Kachia, and Lere local government areas were enrolled as a pilot monitoring cohort. Baseline soil health data were collected using a 40-indicator monitoring protocol covering biological, chemical, physical, and microbiological parameters. Sampling design, sampling frequency, data management systems, and threshold alert criteria were specified. Key farm staff were trained in field monitoring procedures. Findings confirmed significant spatial variability in soil health status within individual commercial farms, validating the need for spatially stratified monitoring rather than single composite sampling. The programme design delivered includes a minimum dataset of 15 indicators for cost-effective routine monitoring, an annual comprehensive assessment protocol, a digital data management system, and decision-support thresholds for management intervention. The study recommends adoption of this monitoring programme by the Kaduna State Ministry of Agriculture as a condition of commercial farm registration.
