The Pragmatics of Hausa Politeness Strategies in Professional Communication Contexts

Politeness theory provides a productive analytical framework for examining how speakers manage face and social relationship in communicative interaction, yet the pragmatic structures of Hausa politeness strategies in professional settings remain underanalysed in existing scholarship. This study investigates the pragmatic features of Hausa politeness strategies as deployed in professional communication contexts in northern Nigeria, focusing on workplace, healthcare, and government service settings. A pragmatic analysis design was employed, collecting naturally occurring Hausa speech data from 60 recorded professional interactions in three settings: a Kano general hospital outpatient clinic, a government ministry public service counter, and a Hausa-medium radio station newsroom. Data were supplemented by discourse completion tasks administered to 80 working professionals, eliciting politeness strategies in standardised professional scenarios. Brown and Levinson's politeness framework was applied with adaptations for Hausa cultural specificity. Findings reveal a rich repertoire of Hausa professional politeness strategies including elaborate greeting sequences, indirect request formulations, formulaic apology expressions, and deference-marking pronoun choices. However, significant variation in strategy use is observed between professional domains, with healthcare interactions showing greater reliance on indirect politeness forms than government service interactions. Status asymmetry in workplace hierarchies strongly shapes politeness strategy selection. The study identifies gaps in existing Hausa politeness research and contributes empirically-grounded analysis of professional pragmatic norms that has direct pedagogical implications for professional Hausa communication training programmes.
