Role of Community Participation in Enhancing the Effectiveness of Malaria Health Education in South West Nigeria

Community participation is a cornerstone of effective public health education, yet its specific contribution to malaria health education outcomes in South West Nigeria is underexplored. This study investigated the role of community participation in enhancing the effectiveness of malaria health education programmes in South West Nigeria, covering Ondo, Ogun, and Oyo states. A comparative cross-sectional design was used, with 300 community members recruited from communities with high, moderate, and low levels of documented community participation in health programme implementation. A validated structured questionnaire measured malaria knowledge, preventive behaviour, and community participation levels. Analysis employed ANOVA, correlation, and hierarchical regression. Results showed that communities with high participation levels demonstrated significantly better malaria prevention knowledge scores (mean 78.3 versus 54.1, p less than 0.01) and higher insecticide-treated net usage rates. Community involvement in needs assessment, programme planning, and monitoring were the participation dimensions most strongly associated with outcomes. The study provides empirical support for participatory health education models in malaria control and recommends institutionalising community participation mechanisms in the South West Nigeria primary healthcare system.
