Agricultural Entrepreneurship and Rural Business Development in South South Nigeria

This study examines agricultural entrepreneurship patterns and rural business development dynamics in South South Nigeria, assessing the factors that enable and constrain agricultural enterprise growth in the region. The South South geopolitical zone's oil economy dominance has historically overshadowed agricultural enterprise development, yet the region's rich natural resources in fisheries, palm oil, cassava, and horticulture offer significant agribusiness opportunities. This study uses a survey design, collecting data from 180 agricultural entrepreneurs in Rivers, Bayelsa, and Cross River States. Entrepreneurship dimensions assessed include enterprise innovation, market orientation, growth intention, and risk management practices. Business development constraints and enablers are identified through factor analysis and regression. Findings reveal that agricultural entrepreneurs in the South South face distinctive challenges including land access complexity due to community land management systems, oil industry economic crowding effects on agricultural labour costs, and environmental degradation of productive fishery and farming lands. Despite these constraints, significant entrepreneurial dynamism exists in aquaculture, cassava processing, and plantain farming. Access to business development services and financial capital are the strongest enterprise growth predictors. The study concludes that agricultural entrepreneurship in South South Nigeria has significant untapped potential that requires targeted business development support. It recommends agricultural enterprise development funds with technical assistance components specifically designed for the region's unique context.
