📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study empirically examines the role of agricultural cooperative membership in facilitating technology diffusion and improving agricultural productivity in South East Nigeria, contributing rigorous causal evidence to a literature dominated by descriptive case studies. Agricultural cooperatives are hypothesised to improve technology diffusion through collective demonstrations, information sharing networks, bulk input procurement, and reduced transaction costs for technology acquisition. This study uses a quasi-experimental design exploiting the staggered rollout of cooperative registration support in Anambra, Imo, and Enugu States. Difference-in-differences and instrumental variable estimation methods are applied to farm household panel data from 380 farming households surveyed in 2019, 2021, and 2023. Technology adoption is measured across improved seed varieties, fertiliser use, pest management practices, and post-harvest storage. Productivity is assessed using crop output value per unit of input cost. Findings reveal that cooperative membership increases technology adoption rates by an average of 24 percentage points across the technology categories studied. The diffusion effect operates primarily through information network channels rather than input cost reduction alone. Productivity improvements attributable to cooperative membership average 19 percent after controlling for selection bias. The study contributes original causal evidence on cooperative-technology diffusion linkages and recommends cooperative development as a cost-effective agricultural productivity policy in South East Nigeria.
