📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This research examines the effect of diversity management on team performance at Access Bank Plc in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, South South Nigeria. Nigeria's multi-ethnic and multilingual character means that workforce diversity is both a structural reality and a strategic management challenge for Nigerian organisations. Access Bank, known for its diversity and inclusion commitments, provides a relevant context for examining how diversity management policies translate into measurable team outcomes. The study adopts a descriptive survey design, with 160 employees drawn from the bank's Port Harcourt branches across retail, corporate banking, and operations divisions. A validated questionnaire is the primary data instrument, analysed using descriptive statistics and Spearman rank correlation. The study is grounded in the Social Identity Theory and the Value-in-Diversity Hypothesis. Findings reveal that teams with actively managed diversity, characterised by inclusive leadership behaviours and cross-functional collaboration practices, consistently outperform homogeneous or poorly integrated teams on service quality metrics. The study also documents that diversity without deliberate inclusion strategies generates interpersonal tension rather than performance benefits. Recommendations include mandatory diversity and inclusion training for team leaders, structured cross-functional team assignments, and the establishment of employee resource groups. By grounding the analysis in South South Nigeria, this study adds to the geographically diverse evidence base on diversity management in Nigerian banking.
