The Impact of Remote Work Policies on Employee Productivity in Nigerian Technology Firms: A Study of Andela and Flutterwave

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study investigates the impact of remote work policies on employee productivity in selected Nigerian technology firms, focusing on Andela and Flutterwave, two prominent fintech and talent companies with significant Nigerian footprints. The adoption of remote work arrangements accelerated globally following the COVID-19 pandemic, and Nigerian tech firms have emerged as early adopters of hybrid and fully remote work models. The study employs a descriptive survey design, using online questionnaires administered to 140 employees across both organisations. Data are collected on productivity self-assessments, collaboration efficiency, and work-life balance perceptions. The study draws on the Job Demands-Resources Model as its theoretical framework. Findings reveal that the majority of respondents report equal or higher productivity when working remotely, particularly for tasks requiring deep concentration and independent execution. However, collaborative and creative tasks are perceived as less effective in remote settings, suggesting a nuanced rather than universally positive impact. The study also documents connectivity infrastructure challenges, particularly among staff residing outside Lagos, as a significant moderator of remote work productivity outcomes. Recommendations include the adoption of structured hybrid work models, investment in digital collaboration tools, and equitable provision of home-office support allowances. This research contributes timely, firm-level evidence on the HRM implications of remote work in Nigeria's emerging technology sector.
