Appraisal of Cultural Tourism Infrastructure at Ife Museum of Natural History, Osun State, South West Nigeria

This study appraises the cultural tourism infrastructure at the Natural History Museum of Ile-Ife in Osun State, South West Nigeria. The museum houses a significant collection of Yoruba art, including renowned Ife bronze sculptures and terracotta heads that are internationally recognised as masterpieces of African artistic heritage. Despite its cultural significance, the museum's tourism infrastructure has received limited academic scrutiny. A descriptive survey design is adopted with questionnaires administered to 130 museum visitors and semi-structured interviews conducted with five museum administrators. Infrastructure dimensions assessed include exhibition display quality, signage and interpretation standards, visitor reception facilities, security of artefacts, and overall accessibility. Findings reveal that 71 percent of visitors rate the bronze and terracotta collection as exceptional, confirming the museum's core asset strength. However, physical infrastructure including inadequate air conditioning in galleries, outdated display cases, lack of interactive interpretation panels, and limited restroom facilities are identified as significant detractors from the visitor experience. The study recommends that the Osun State government allocate dedicated capital funding for museum modernisation, introduce augmented reality interpretation technology for key exhibits, and develop stronger international partnerships for conservation support and cultural exchange programmes.
