📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study develops an original theoretical model of information asymmetry-driven market failures in Nigerian agricultural value chains and provides empirical evidence on the welfare costs of these failures and the effectiveness of coordination mechanisms in addressing them. Information asymmetry between buyers and sellers is a fundamental source of agricultural market failure, manifesting in adverse selection in seed and input markets, moral hazard in contract farming arrangements, and quality signalling failures in commodity export markets. While information asymmetry theory is well-developed in agricultural economics literature, its systematic application to the specific institutional context of Nigerian value chains is limited. This study proposes an integrated market failure model that links information asymmetry types to specific coordination failures observable in Nigerian value chains, with testable predictions about price dispersion, quality maldistribution, and coordination mechanism adoption patterns. Empirical evidence is generated from original market microstructure data collected in cocoa, sesame, and catfish value chains across Osun, Nasarawa, and Lagos States, combining trader-level surveys with transaction-level price and quality data and natural experiments exploiting certification programme rollouts. Findings establish significant quality signalling failures in sesame and catfish markets that result in pooling equilibria where high-quality producers receive insufficient quality premiums. Third-party certification interventions generate significant quality price premium separation. The study contributes an original information asymmetry framework for Nigerian value chains and recommends investment in certification infrastructure and commodity exchange grading systems.
