Transaction Cost Economics and Agricultural Market Development in Northern Nigeria: An Institutional Analysis

This study applies transaction cost economics to analyse the determinants of agricultural market development in northern Nigeria, examining how transaction costs arising from information asymmetry, contract enforcement failures, and asset specificity shape the organisation, performance, and development trajectory of agricultural markets. Transaction cost theory provides a powerful framework for understanding why agricultural markets in northern Nigeria are often thin, fragmented, and characterised by high marketing margins and poor price discovery. This study develops an original transaction cost framework specific to the northern Nigerian agricultural market context, incorporating the region's distinctive institutional features including Islamic commercial norms, traditional authority market governance, ethnic trading networks, and state-level regulatory environments. Empirical evidence is generated from an original market survey of 180 traders and 240 farmers in maize, cowpea, and sesame markets in Kano, Kaduna, Sokoto, and Katsina States, combined with market microstructure analysis of price data and trading volume statistics. Transaction cost measurement uses revealed preference methods and direct cost assessment approaches. Institutional determinants of transaction costs are analysed using multilevel regression. Findings reveal that ethnic trading network membership significantly reduces contract enforcement costs but may reduce market competition. State-level regulatory inconsistency is a major source of transaction cost variation across markets. The study contributes an original transaction cost framework for northern Nigerian agricultural markets and recommends institutional reform targeting contract enforcement mechanisms and regulatory harmonisation across northern states.
