The Long-Run Relationship Between Agricultural Development, Structural Transformation, and Poverty Reduction in Nigeria: A Historical and Econometric Analysis

This study provides a long-run historical and econometric analysis of the relationships among agricultural development, structural transformation, and poverty reduction in Nigeria, spanning the post-independence period from 1960 to 2023. Understanding the historical dynamics of these relationships is essential for identifying why Nigeria's agricultural and economic development trajectory has diverged so significantly from successful developing economy cases in Asia and elsewhere, and for informing current development strategy. This study integrates historical data reconstruction, structural change accounting, and modern time series econometrics. Agricultural development is measured using reconstructed historical series of agricultural GDP per worker, land productivity, and technology adoption. Structural transformation is tracked through sectoral GDP and employment shares. Poverty is proxied by real agricultural wage rates and household consumption data where available. Johansen cointegration, structural VAR, and historical decomposition methods are applied to estimate long-run relationships and identify key historical junctures where development trajectories diverged from potential. Findings reveal three distinct structural break points in Nigeria's agricultural-poverty relationship, coinciding with the oil boom (1970s), structural adjustment (1980s-90s), and the 2010s agricultural policy reform era. Oil boom-era agricultural neglect generated persistent structural damage to the agricultural knowledge and infrastructure base that policy reforms in subsequent decades only partially repaired. The study contributes an original long-run historical analysis of Nigerian agricultural transformation and recommends a 25-year agricultural development strategy grounded in the historical lessons identified.
