Sociolinguistic Analysis of Igbo Language Use in Social Media Among Youth in Aba, Abia State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study conducts a sociolinguistic analysis of Igbo language use in social media communication among youth aged sixteen to thirty in Aba, Abia State, South East Nigeria. Social media platforms, particularly WhatsApp, Facebook, and TikTok, have emerged as significant informal language use domains that both reflect and reshape linguistic practices in Nigeria's digital youth culture. Aba, as a major commercial hub in the South East, presents a dynamic sociolinguistic environment characterised by multilingualism and rapid cultural change. The research analyses a purposively sampled corpus of one thousand social media posts and voice notes in Igbo or containing Igbo elements, collected between January and June 2024. Analysis employs a mixed sociolinguistic and computer-mediated communication framework. Findings reveal that pure Igbo posts constitute only twenty-two percent of the corpus, while code-mixed Igbo-English content dominates at sixty-eight percent. Informal register innovations, orthographic creativity, and emoji integration are common, suggesting that digital Igbo is developing as a distinct sociolectal variety. Youth respondents report using Igbo in digital spaces primarily to express humour, cultural pride, and in-group solidarity. The study recommends leveraging these organic digital practices in formal Igbo language teaching as motivational entry points. Keywords: social media, Igbo language, youth, sociolinguistics, code-mixing.
