📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study analyses the pragmatic functions of Igbo greetings in business communication contexts in Nnewi, Anambra State, South East Nigeria. Nnewi, widely recognised as Nigeria's foremost indigenous auto-parts manufacturing hub, is a commercial environment in which business communication is deeply embedded in Igbo cultural protocols. Greetings in Igbo culture are not mere phatic tokens but carry pragmatic weight as relational management, status negotiation, and transaction-facilitating instruments. The research collects primary data through participant observation of business interactions in twelve auto-parts markets and workshops over eight weeks, supplemented by thirty semi-structured interviews with traders, apprentices, and workshop owners. Greetings are transcribed and subjected to speech act and politeness theory analysis. Findings reveal six pragmatic functions of Igbo greetings in business contexts: opening transactions, expressing respect hierarchies, negotiating credit relationships, building trust capital with new customers, managing conflict de-escalation, and concluding transactions ceremonially. Time-of-day greetings are found to carry implicit social status encoding, with elaborate extended greeting sequences correlated with higher-value transactions and senior interlocutor status. The study argues that Igbo greeting pragmatics constitute a sophisticated relational communication system with direct economic implications. Keywords: Igbo greetings, pragmatics, business communication, Nnewi, politeness theory.
