The Role of Packaging Design in Consumer Buying Decisions: A Study of Packaged Food Products in Kano State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study investigates the role of packaging design in influencing consumer buying decisions for packaged food products in Kano State, North West Nigeria. Packaging has evolved from a purely functional role to a powerful marketing communication tool, serving as a critical point of differentiation at the retail shelf. In the context of Kano, where both modern retail outlets and traditional open markets coexist, understanding packaging's persuasive effect is particularly relevant. The study employs a descriptive survey design with a sample of 300 consumers drawn from selected supermarkets and open markets in Kano Metropolitan Area. Data collection relies on a researcher-administered questionnaire that measures perceptions of packaging colour, typography, material quality, and information clarity. Analysis uses descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. The study also examines whether demographic factors such as age, gender, and income level moderate the relationship between packaging design and buying decisions. Initial findings suggest that colour and label clarity are the most influential packaging attributes for Kano consumers, particularly among low-to-middle income shoppers. The study challenges assumptions that packaging is of secondary concern in price-sensitive markets by demonstrating its standalone influence on purchase behaviour. Recommendations are directed at food manufacturers, packaging firms, and consumer goods marketers operating in northern Nigeria. This research contributes empirical evidence to the limited body of packaging studies conducted within West African market settings.
