Market Penetration Strategies of Chinese Consumer Electronics Brands in Nigerian Markets: A Study in Kano

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the market penetration strategies of Chinese consumer electronics brands in Nigerian markets, with specific reference to the Kano retail environment, North West Nigeria. Chinese electronics brands including Infinix, Tecno, Itel, and several white-label manufacturers have achieved remarkable penetration in Nigeria's highly price-sensitive consumer electronics market. Understanding the strategic approaches behind this success offers valuable lessons for domestic manufacturers and marketing practitioners. The study adopts a mixed descriptive design, combining a consumer survey of 280 electronics buyers in Kano's Sabon Gari and Wambai markets with interviews with 12 electronics retailers. Consumer data are analysed using descriptive statistics and factor analysis, while retailer interviews are thematically coded. The study evaluates product localisation, aggressive pricing, after-sales service, and retailer incentive programmes as penetration strategy dimensions. Preliminary findings indicate that product localisation (local language interfaces, extended battery capacity for low electricity environments) and competitive pricing are the most significant penetration drivers. The research also highlights the role of aggressive retailer margin structures in sustaining brand visibility at the point of sale. Findings are relevant to Nigerian electronics manufacturers, Chinese brands seeking market share optimisation, and trade policy makers concerned with domestic industry competitiveness.
