Assessment of Hadith Studies Curriculum in Private Islamic Secondary Schools in Oyo State

This study assesses the content and delivery of the Hadith Studies curriculum in private Islamic secondary schools in Oyo State, South West Nigeria. Hadith sciences form a critical pillar of Islamic scholarship, yet their treatment in secondary school curricula across Nigeria is often superficial and examination-driven. The study employs a descriptive survey design with data collected from 25 Hadith teachers and 300 students in twelve private Islamic schools in Ibadan, Ogbomoso, and Oyo town. Instruments include curriculum review checklists, teacher questionnaires, and student achievement tests. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. Findings indicate that the Hadith curriculum covers major canonical collections such as Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, but critical skills such as Isnad analysis, Hadith classification, and contextual application are inadequately taught. Student performance on application-oriented test items was significantly lower than on recall items. The study recommends the revision of the Hadith Studies curriculum to include analytical competencies, the training of teachers in advanced Hadith methodology, and the introduction of Hadith study circles as a co-curricular activity. These findings are relevant to private Islamic school proprietors, the West African Examinations Council, and Islamic education reform advocates in South West Nigeria.
