Evaluation of Contact Lens Fitting Practices Among Optometrists in Lagos State Private Clinics

Contact lens fitting is a specialized clinical skill requiring proficiency in corneal topography interpretation, lens selection, and aftercare management. Variations in fitting practices among private practitioners can significantly affect patient safety and satisfaction. This study evaluates the contact lens fitting practices and adherence to clinical guidelines among optometrists in private eye clinics in Lagos State, South West Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey design will be used, targeting 150 registered optometrists in private practice across Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, and Surulere. A structured questionnaire covering lens selection criteria, diagnostic lens trial practices, follow-up schedules, and patient education protocols will be self-administered. Responses will be benchmarked against guidelines from the British Contact Lens Association and the International Association of Contact Lens Educators. Data analysis will involve descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. The study anticipates that a significant proportion of practitioners deviate from best practice guidelines, particularly regarding follow-up scheduling and patient education on lens hygiene. Findings will be presented at the Nigerian Optometric Association annual conference to stimulate professional discourse and will be submitted to the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria (ODORBN) to inform continuing education programs. This research contributes to professional standards development for contact lens practice in Nigeria's South West zone and provides evidence for targeted training initiatives.
