Audit of Glaucoma Case Detection and Management at Secondary Eye Care Facilities in Oyo State

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in Nigeria and the globe, yet detection rates at the secondary care level remain suboptimal. This audit evaluates glaucoma case detection practices and management quality at secondary eye care facilities in Oyo State, South West Nigeria. A retrospective cross-sectional design will be employed, reviewing clinical records of patients managed for glaucoma at five government-owned general hospitals with functional eye units over a three-year period. Key audit standards will include completeness of glaucoma diagnostic workup, appropriateness of prescribed treatment, frequency of follow-up visits, and documentation of visual field and optic disc assessments. Data will be extracted using a standardized audit tool and analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. The audit anticipates identifying significant gaps in adherence to recommended glaucoma management protocols, particularly regarding visual field monitoring and patient counseling on treatment adherence. Findings will be submitted to the Oyo State Ministry of Health and the hospital management boards to guide targeted training of eye care personnel and improvement of equipment access. This audit contributes to quality improvement in glaucoma care at the secondary level and reinforces the importance of evidence-based clinical governance in Nigerian eye health institutions.
