Analysis of Social Media Influence on Gender Identity Among University Students in Lagos State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Social media platforms have emerged as significant arenas for the construction, negotiation, and contestation of gender identities among young Nigerians, particularly university students navigating modernity and tradition. This study analyses the influence of social media on gender identity formation and expression among undergraduate students at three universities in Lagos State. A quantitative survey design was employed, with 300 undergraduate students completing structured questionnaires examining social media use patterns, gender identity attitudes, and exposure to feminist and traditional gender content. Data were analysed using regression analysis, descriptive statistics, and factor analysis. Findings reveal that heavy social media users, particularly those engaging with feminist content, demonstrate more egalitarian gender attitudes and greater identity flexibility than low-usage peers. Exposure to international feminist discourse via Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok is significantly associated with questioning of traditional gender norms. Conversely, exposure to hyper-masculine content is associated with more restrictive attitudes towards women. Most respondents navigate a dual online-offline identity, presenting more traditional gender performances in physical community settings. The study recommends critical digital literacy programmes incorporating gender awareness for university students and engagement of content creators as gender equality advocates. Keywords: social media, gender identity, university students, Lagos State, online gender norms
