Biochemical Risk Profiling for Cardiovascular Disease in Retired Military Officers in Kaduna

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Retired military personnel represent a population with unique cardiovascular risk profiles shaped by decades of physical demand followed by relatively sedentary post-service lifestyles. This study conducts a biochemical risk profiling for cardiovascular disease in retired military officers attending a veterans' health clinic in Kaduna, North West Nigeria. A cross-sectional design was employed, recruiting 180 retired officers aged 45 to 70 years. Serum lipid profile, fasting blood glucose, glycated haemoglobin, C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, and serum homocysteine were measured. Anthropometric indices including body mass index and waist circumference were recorded alongside blood pressure measurements. Dietary habits, physical activity, alcohol consumption, and tobacco use since retirement were assessed by questionnaire. The study evaluates the 10-year cardiovascular risk using biochemically informed scoring tools adapted for the Nigerian context. Prevalence of multiple concurrent risk factors was analysed by logistic regression. Findings will highlight the need for targeted cardiovascular risk management programmes within military veteran care frameworks in North West Nigeria. Keywords: cardiovascular risk profiling, retired military officers, lipid profile, metabolic risk, Kaduna.
