The Impact of Oil Spills on the Social Life of Fishing Communities in Bayelsa State

Repeated oil spills in the Niger Delta have imposed severe ecological and socioeconomic costs on coastal fishing communities whose livelihoods, social organization, and cultural practices are intimately connected to aquatic environments. This study examines the social impact of oil spills on fishing communities in Bayelsa State, South South Nigeria, focusing on livelihood disruption, community cohesion, and social conflict outcomes. A qualitative case study design was adopted, with twelve focus group discussions conducted across four fishing communities in Southern Ijaw and Ekeremor local government areas, complemented by ten in-depth interviews with community leaders, environmental justice advocates, and state fisheries officials. Results reveal that oil spill incidents in all four communities had resulted in total collapse of fishing activity for periods ranging from six weeks to three years, depending on spill severity. Loss of fishing income triggered cascading social consequences including elevated school dropout rates, increased food insecurity, and heightened domestic tensions. Community social cohesion was paradoxically strengthened in some communities through collective mobilization against petroleum companies, while fracturing in others where compensation payment processes generated internal conflict between community leaders and ordinary members. Women, who traditionally processed and marketed fish, experienced disproportionate livelihood losses. Youth radicalization linked to environmental grievances was identified by four of ten interviewed leaders as an emerging concern. Recommendations include mandatory community social impact assessments before petroleum operations, independent spill compensation processes, and livelihood diversification programs for affected communities.
