Examining the Role of Vocational Education in Rural Industrialization in Niger State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examined the role of vocational education in stimulating rural industrialization processes in Niger State, North Central Nigeria. Rural industrialization, driven by the development of small and medium enterprises in agro-processing, crafts, and construction, is increasingly recognized as a sustainable economic development pathway, and vocational education is expected to supply the skills foundation for this transition. A mixed-methods design was employed, combining survey data from 250 vocational graduates and 80 rural enterprise owners with key informant interviews from 20 policymakers and community leaders. Spatial analysis of enterprise locations relative to vocational institutions was also conducted. Results demonstrated a statistically significant clustering of rural enterprises within 20 kilometers of functional technical colleges, supporting a geographic spillover hypothesis. Vocational graduates who had accessed post-training enterprise support services were 3.1 times more likely to establish a productive rural enterprise than those without such support. The study recommends that Niger State integrate vocational education planning with its rural industrialization strategy, co-locate new vocational centres with planned industrial clusters, and develop agriculture-linked technical education programmes responsive to the state's food processing potential. These findings contribute original empirical evidence to the literature on vocational education's spatial economic development role in Nigeria. Keywords: vocational education, rural industrialization, Niger State, enterprise development, economic geography.
