📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study examines the role of distance learning in expanding access to vocational education for rural adults in Niger State, North Central Nigeria. Many rural adults in Niger State lack access to conventional technical education due to distance, domestic responsibilities, and economic constraints. Distance learning offers flexible, location-independent pathways for skills acquisition and professional upgrading. The study adopts a descriptive survey design, engaging 150 adult learners enrolled in open and distance learning vocational programmes from institutions affiliated with the National Open University of Nigeria in Minna, Bida, and Kontagora local government areas. A validated questionnaire measures access indicators, learning experience, instructional support quality, and skill acquisition outcomes. Descriptive statistics and regression analysis are employed. Findings are expected to reveal that distance learning has improved access for rural adults previously excluded from formal vocational education, but learning outcomes are constrained by poor connectivity, limited practical component delivery, and inadequate learner support services. The study also explores gendered patterns in distance learning enrolment and completion. Recommendations include expanded mobile learning infrastructure, local learning support centres in rural communities, practical skills assessment partnerships with community artisans, and dedicated facilitator training for rural distance vocational education. This study contributes to open and distance learning research in Nigerian vocational education and informs policy on flexible access strategies for adult skills development in rural northern Nigeria.
