The Role of Carnival Arts in Tourism Development in Calabar, Cross River State

This study examines the role of carnival arts in driving tourism development in Calabar, Cross River State, South South Nigeria. The Calabar Carnival, branded as Africa's biggest street party, has grown into one of Nigeria's most recognised cultural events, attracting thousands of domestic and international visitors annually. This research assesses how the theatrical and performative dimensions of the carnival contribute to tourist arrivals, local economic activity, and cultural diplomacy. Data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to tourists, carnival performers, and hospitality operators, complemented by interviews with state tourism officials. A descriptive survey design was adopted. The study finds that the Calabar Carnival significantly boosts hotel occupancy, street commerce, and transport services during the festival period, with theatrical performances identified as the most attended and photographed component. However, the research also notes challenges including inadequate infrastructure, poor crowd management, and limited international marketing. The study concludes that the theatrical content of the Calabar Carnival is a core driver of its tourism appeal and recommends sustained government investment in performance quality, safety infrastructure, and global marketing campaigns.
