📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study examines the role of sound design in shaping audience experience in contemporary Nigerian theatre productions. Sound design, encompassing the selection and placement of music, sound effects, ambient noise, and silence, is an integral but often underanalysed element of theatrical production that profoundly influences emotional response, narrative comprehension, and spatial immersion. The research investigates how sound designers in selected professional and university theatre productions in Lagos and Enugu approach their craft and how audiences perceive and respond to sound in performance. Data were collected through interviews with sound designers, directors, and audience members, as well as observation of sound design processes during production. Post-performance audience surveys measured emotional and cognitive responses attributable to sound. The study finds that dynamic and culturally resonant sound design significantly enhances audience engagement and emotional investment in performance narratives. Indigenous musical elements and ambient soundscapes were found to increase audience identification with culturally specific storylines. The research identifies the shortage of professional sound equipment in most Nigerian theatre spaces as a major constraint. The study concludes that sound design deserves greater scholarly and practical attention as a core element of Nigerian theatrical production. Keywords: sound design, audience experience, Nigerian theatre, production elements, sensory engagement.
