The Challenges of Theatre Space and Infrastructure in Promoting Live Performance in Kano

This study investigates the challenges posed by inadequate theatre space and infrastructure in promoting live performance in Kano, North West Nigeria. Theatre spaces, including proscenium stages, black box theatres, and open-air performance arenas, are fundamental to the development of a vibrant live performance culture. However, many Nigerian cities, including Kano, face significant deficits in accessible, well-equipped performance venues. The research examines the current state of theatre infrastructure in Kano, identifies key challenges faced by practitioners, and explores the impact of spatial limitations on the quality and frequency of live performances. Data were gathered through interviews with theatre directors, event promoters, and cultural administrators, supported by visits to existing performance spaces in the city. The study finds that the majority of theatre productions in Kano are mounted in multipurpose halls not designed for performance, resulting in poor acoustics, inadequate lighting rigs, and limited backstage facilities. This constrains production ambition and discourages investment from commercial producers. The research concludes that the development of purpose-built theatre infrastructure is a prerequisite for a sustainable live performance culture in Kano.
