The Integration of Technology in Nigerian Theatre Productions: Opportunities and Challenges

This study examines the integration of technology in Nigerian theatre productions, exploring the opportunities presented by digital tools and the challenges encountered by practitioners in adopting them. Advances in theatrical technology, including digital projection, LED lighting systems, live-looping audio, and augmented reality, have transformed performance possibilities globally. The research investigates the extent to which Nigerian theatre companies and university drama departments are incorporating these technologies and the factors that facilitate or inhibit adoption. Data were collected through interviews with directors, technical directors, and set designers from theatre companies in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, supplemented by observation of productions using digital elements. The study finds that technology adoption in Nigerian theatre is growing but remains uneven, with Lagos-based commercial productions leading in digital integration while university and community theatre groups face significant resource barriers. High equipment costs, unreliable power supply, and limited technical expertise are identified as primary constraints. The research concludes that intentional investment in technology training and infrastructure is essential for Nigerian theatre to remain competitive with global performance standards.
