Assessment of Wind Energy Resources Along the Coastal Belt of Rivers State, South South Nigeria

Wind energy represents an underutilised renewable resource in Nigeria's coastal and riverine regions, despite documented wind speed patterns that could support small-scale power generation. This study assesses wind energy resources along selected coastal communities in Rivers State, South South Nigeria, with emphasis on determining wind speed variability, power density, and the technical feasibility of deploying wind turbines for community electricity needs. Secondary wind data obtained from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency covering a five-year period were analysed using the Weibull distribution model to characterise wind speed frequency and energy output potential. Structured interviews and energy audits were conducted across 150 fishing and artisanal households to establish baseline energy demand. The research further evaluates the compatibility of identified wind resources with commercially available small-scale wind turbines. Findings indicate that coastal areas experience mean wind speeds of 4.5 to 6.8 metres per second, sufficient for micro-turbine deployment in off-grid applications. Economic analysis using net present value and levelised cost of energy calculations suggests wind energy can be cost-competitive with diesel generators over a ten-year lifespan. The study recommends pilot installations in three identified high-potential communities and proposes a regulatory pathway for licensing small wind installations in riverine areas.
