Small and medium enterprises in Nigeria's food processing sector operate under severe energy cost pressures, relying heavily on diesel generators due to the unreliability of grid electricity supply. This study investigates energy efficiency measures applicable to food processing small and medium enterprises in Lagos State, South West Nigeria, with emphasis on identifying major energy consumption points and evaluating technically feasible efficiency interventions. A purposive sample of 40 small and medium food processing firms in Lagos Mainland and Alimosho local government areas was selected for energy audits conducted over a four-month period. Audit instruments included power quality analysers, infrared thermometers, and flow meters to quantify energy use in refrigeration, processing machinery, lighting, and space heating. Energy intensity metrics were computed per unit of product output and benchmarked against regional standards. Findings indicate that refrigeration and processing equipment alone account for 71 percent of total energy consumption, with significant losses attributable to poor insulation, equipment ageing, and unoptimised operating schedules. Three prioritised efficiency packages are recommended, with projected energy savings ranging from 18 to 44 percent depending on investment level. A simple payback period analysis shows most measures are financially recoverable within two to three years. The study advocates for a dedicated energy efficiency advisory service within the Lagos State Ministry of Energy.
