📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study examined the role of the school laboratory environment on student performance in Chemistry in urban secondary schools in Rivers State, Nigeria. The laboratory is a central pillar of effective Chemistry education, yet the condition and management of school laboratories vary widely even within urban settings, with direct implications for student learning outcomes. A descriptive correlational design was used. The sample comprised 300 SS2 Chemistry students and 40 Chemistry teachers from 20 public secondary schools in Port Harcourt and Obio-Akpor Local Government Areas. A Laboratory Environment Quality Scale and a Chemistry Performance Record Sheet were used to collect data. Expert validation and test-retest reliability procedures yielded a coefficient of 0.77. Pearson's correlation and multiple regression analysis were used to analyse the data. Results revealed a significant positive correlation between laboratory quality scores, including equipment availability, cleanliness, safety standards, and teacher supervision, and student Chemistry performance. Regression analysis identified teacher supervision quality and equipment adequacy as the strongest predictors of performance. The study recommended prioritised laboratory maintenance funding, structured laboratory safety training for both teachers and students, and adoption of laboratory performance indicators in school quality assurance frameworks. Keywords: laboratory environment, Chemistry performance, urban secondary schools, Rivers State, science education.
