📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study examined how coordination of extracurricular science activities relates to student science achievement in Federal Government Colleges in the South South geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Extracurricular science activities, including quiz competitions, exhibitions, and clubs, are theorised to complement formal instruction by providing motivational and applied science contexts; yet their systematic coordination and impact assessment in federal boarding schools is underexplored. A descriptive correlational design was adopted. The study covered 10 Federal Government Colleges across Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River States. Data were gathered from 300 SS2 students and 60 Science teachers using an Extracurricular Activity Coordination Index and a Science Achievement Records Form. Reliability was established at 0.80. Pearson's correlation and regression analysis were applied. Results indicated a significant positive relationship between extracurricular science activity coordination quality and student science achievement scores. Schools with a designated extracurricular science coordinator and a scheduled activity calendar demonstrated the strongest student performance outcomes. Competition participation was the most significant single-activity predictor of achievement. Recommendations included appointment of extracurricular science coordinators in all federal colleges, annual inter-college science olympiad events, and dedicated budgetary allocation for science competitions.
