Analysis of Energy Consumption Patterns in Agro-Processing Industries in Rivers State

This study analyses energy consumption patterns and efficiency in agro-processing industries in Rivers State, South South Nigeria. Agro-processing enterprises including palm oil mills, cassava processing factories, fish smoking facilities, and rice parboiling plants are major energy consumers in Rivers State's industrial sector. Understanding energy use patterns and identifying efficiency improvement opportunities is important for reducing production costs and environmental impact in this sector. This study uses an energy audit methodology, collecting electricity consumption records, fuel purchase data, and production output records from 25 agro-processing enterprises in Port Harcourt, Eleme, and Ahoada West local government areas. Specific energy consumption intensity is computed for each processing activity. Energy balance analysis identifies energy losses by process stage. A questionnaire survey of facility managers assesses energy management practices. Findings reveal that specific energy consumption in sampled enterprises is 35 to 65 percent above international benchmarks for equivalent processing operations, attributable to old equipment, poor maintenance, and absence of energy monitoring. Palm oil processing shows the highest energy intensity, followed by rice parboiling. Only 8 percent of sampled enterprises have conducted any form of energy audit. The study concludes that significant energy efficiency improvement potential exists in Rivers State agro-processing. It recommends mandatory energy auditing for medium and large agro-processors and targeted equipment replacement grant programmes.
