GIS Applications in Market Infrastructure Planning in Ogun State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

The spatial distribution of market infrastructure significantly influences trade efficiency, commodity prices, and the livelihoods of informal sector participants in South West Nigeria. This study applies GIS to assess market infrastructure distribution and guide planning for new market development in Ogun State. Existing market locations in the Ogun Central senatorial district are geo-referenced and characterised by size, commodity type, market day cycle, and accessibility. Population distribution data and road network layers are integrated to model trade area boundaries and estimate market hinterlands using the Reilly's Law of Retail Gravitation. Underserved zones lacking adequate market infrastructure within acceptable travel thresholds are identified. Results indicate significant market infrastructure gaps in the Obafemi-Owode and Odeda LGAs, where communities rely on distant weekly markets due to absent local facilities. A multi-criteria suitability analysis recommends five optimal locations for new daily or periodic market development in the state.
