GIS Analysis of Land Tenure Conflicts in Peri-Urban Ibadan, Oyo State

The rapid expansion of Ibadan's urban fringe into surrounding agricultural communities generates land tenure conflicts that disrupt livelihoods and impede sustainable land management. This study uses GIS to analyse spatial patterns of land tenure conflicts in selected peri-urban communities in the Akinyele and Ona-Ara LGAs of Oyo State. Land tenure conflict data compiled through community surveys and records from the Oyo State Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development are geo-referenced and mapped. Spatial overlay analysis examines the relationship between conflict incidence and factors including urban expansion direction, land value gradients derived from proximity analysis, agricultural land cover, and informal settlement density. Results reveal significant clustering of tenure conflicts along the primary growth corridors radiating from the Ibadan urban core toward Moniya and Ido communities. The study recommends implementing a land tenure regularisation programme using systematic parcel mapping to reduce conflict incidence and provide legal security for farmers and incoming residents.
