Chemical Analysis of Locally Produced Herbal Gin and Spirits for Adulterants and Toxic Compounds in Delta State

The proliferation of informally produced alcoholic beverages in Delta State, South South Nigeria, raises serious public health concerns due to the potential inclusion of toxic adulterants and the absence of regulatory oversight. This study analyses samples of locally produced herbal gin and spirits collected from vendors in five communities in Delta State for the presence of methanol, ethanol content, fusel alcohols, artificial sweeteners, and selected heavy metals. A total of 30 beverage samples were collected, including both commercial-branded and unbranded products. Alcohol content was determined by distillation and densitometry. Methanol quantification was performed by the chromotropic acid method and confirmed by gas chromatography-flame ionisation detection. Heavy metals were analysed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry following acid digestion of evaporated samples. Results indicate that methanol was detected in eight of thirty samples, with concentrations in three samples exceeding the Codex Alimentarius permitted limit of 2 grams per litre. Ethanol content varied widely, from 18 to 63 percent volume, with unbranded products showing the greatest variability. Iron and copper concentrations were elevated in several locally produced spirit samples, likely from the use of unlined metal vessels during production. The findings highlight significant regulatory gaps and recommend enforcement of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control standards for locally produced beverages.
