📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study assesses the level of computer literacy among primary school teachers in Imo State, South East Nigeria. The Nigerian government's Universal Basic Education programme has introduced computers into many primary schools, yet teacher competence in computer use remains an understudied aspect of basic education quality. A descriptive survey design was adopted, sampling 200 teachers from public primary schools across Owerri, Orlu, and Okigwe educational zones. A standardised Computer Literacy Assessment Questionnaire, adapted from internationally validated instruments, was administered to measure proficiency across five domains: basic operations, word processing, internet use, digital communication, and educational software use. Findings indicate that most teachers demonstrate acceptable proficiency in basic operations and word processing but very low proficiency in educational software use and internet-based research. Teachers in urban schools consistently scored higher than rural counterparts. Years of teaching experience did not significantly predict computer literacy scores. The study recommends embedding mandatory computer literacy modules in annual teacher professional development programmes for Imo State and investing in school computer laboratories with internet connectivity. Pre-service teacher education programmes at state colleges of education are also urged to strengthen ICT curriculum components. Keywords: computer literacy, primary school teachers, Imo State, ICT competence, basic education
