Relationship Between Internet Access and Academic Achievement of Students in Federal Universities in Ekiti State, South West Nigeria

This study examines the relationship between internet access and academic achievement among undergraduate students in federal universities in Ekiti State, South West Nigeria. Access to the internet is increasingly considered a determinant of educational attainment, as it enables students to engage with research databases, online tutorials, and academic communication tools. A correlational survey design was employed, with a sample of 240 undergraduates drawn from Ekiti State University and Federal University Oye-Ekiti. A validated questionnaire assessed frequency, purpose, and quality of internet access, while academic achievement was measured using cumulative grade point averages obtained from faculty records. Pearson correlation and regression analyses were applied to the data. Results indicate a significant positive correlation between purposeful internet access (research, academic platforms, e-library use) and academic achievement. Students with broadband access at home or in university hostels recorded higher GPAs than those dependent solely on campus Wi-Fi or mobile data. Recreational internet use showed no significant correlation with achievement. The study recommends that university administrations invest in high-capacity campus internet infrastructure and develop digital literacy workshops that guide students in academic uses of the internet.
