Evaluation of School Health Programs in Public Secondary Schools in Akwa Ibom State, South South Nigeria

School health programs encompass health education, health services, and environmental health measures designed to promote student wellbeing and reinforce healthy behaviors. This descriptive study evaluated the implementation and effectiveness of school health programs in twenty public secondary schools in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, South South Nigeria. Data were collected through key informant interviews with school health coordinators and teachers, structured observations, a review of school health program records, and questionnaire surveys administered to 500 students. Assessments covered health education content delivery, availability of first aid facilities, school feeding program quality, mental health support, and environmental sanitation practices. Results showed that only forty-two percent of sampled schools had a designated school health coordinator, and health education was delivered as a formal subject in only thirty-eight percent. First aid kits were available in sixty percent of schools but adequately stocked in only twenty percent. School feeding programs were operational in twelve schools, with food quality and hygiene standards rated satisfactory in half. Mental health resources, including counseling services, were available in only eight percent of schools. Environmental sanitation scores averaged fifty-one percent compliance with minimum standards. Students in schools with structured health programs recorded higher health literacy scores. The study recommends a comprehensive revitalization of the school health program framework in Akwa Ibom State with clear implementation guidelines and dedicated funding.
