📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Background: Childhood asthma is the most common chronic respiratory condition in paediatric primary care and imposes a substantial burden on affected families and health systems. This study determines the prevalence and common trigger factors of asthma among primary school pupils in Ibadan, Oyo State, in the South West geopolitical zone. Methods: A cross-sectional school-based study enrolled 350 pupils from eight randomly selected primary schools. The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood questionnaire was administered to parents. Clinical assessment including peak flow measurement was performed by trained personnel. Results: Asthma prevalence among school-age children was notable, with a higher proportion among boys. Dust exposure at home, cigarette smoke, and cold air were the most frequently reported triggers. Missed school days due to asthma symptoms were significant. Conclusion: Childhood asthma in Ibadan carries a considerable burden that warrants enhanced screening and management capacity at primary care level. Family medicine practitioners should develop structured asthma action plans for school-age children and engage school health teams in environmental trigger reduction. Keywords: childhood asthma, trigger factors, primary school, Ibadan, respiratory health
