Assessment of Workplace Stress and Its Health Consequences Among Bank Workers in Lagos

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Background: Occupational stress is an increasingly recognised determinant of employee health and productivity in high-demand work environments such as commercial banking. This study assesses the prevalence of workplace stress and its perceived health consequences among bank workers in Lagos State, South West geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study enrolled 280 bank employees from three commercial banks using convenience sampling. The Perceived Stress Scale and a structured health consequences questionnaire were used as data collection instruments. Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation were applied. Results: Majority of respondents reported moderate to high levels of workplace stress. Headaches, insomnia, and gastrointestinal symptoms were the most reported health consequences. Job insecurity, target pressure, and long working hours were the leading stressors. Female employees reported higher stress scores than males. Conclusion: Workplace stress among bank employees in Lagos represents a significant occupational health concern with measurable health consequences. Family medicine practitioners in employee assistance programmes should screen for stress-related disorders and provide evidence-based interventions including brief psychological therapies and lifestyle modification counselling.
