Community Awareness of Epilepsy and Its Sociocultural Consequences in Kebbi State

Background: Epilepsy carries a significant social stigma in many Nigerian communities, leading to social exclusion, undertreatment, and poor quality of life for those affected. This study assesses community awareness of epilepsy and its sociocultural consequences in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, in the North West geopolitical zone. Methods: A cross-sectional community-based survey enrolled 280 adults from three wards using multistage sampling. A validated adapted questionnaire assessed epilepsy knowledge, myths, and social responses to people living with epilepsy. Focus group discussions enriched quantitative findings. Results: A significant proportion of respondents attributed epilepsy to spiritual causes. Social exclusion from community events and discouragement from marriage were common sociocultural consequences reported. Respondents with formal education showed significantly better knowledge scores. Conclusion: Community misperceptions about epilepsy in Kebbi State perpetuate harmful stigma that impedes access to treatment. Family medicine practitioners should lead community sensitisation campaigns using culturally adapted messaging through religious and traditional leaders to demystify epilepsy and promote early medical consultation.
