Occurrence of Bed Bugs (Cimex lectularius) in Student Hostels and Its Public Health Implications in a University in Imo State, South East Nigeria

Bed bugs have re-emerged as a global urban pest of significance, with infestations in shared sleeping spaces such as university hostels presenting public health concerns related to sleep disruption, allergic reactions, and psychological distress. Overcrowded dormitories in Nigerian tertiary institutions provide ideal conditions for rapid bed bug population establishment and spread. This study investigates the occurrence and infestation intensity of Cimex lectularius in student hostels at a public university in Imo State, South East Nigeria. Structured inspections using visual examination and harborage searches will be conducted in 80 randomly selected hostel rooms across four accommodation blocks. Infestation severity will be scored using a standardized bed bug visual survey tool. Students will complete questionnaires documenting bite experience, travel history, and awareness of control methods. Specimens will be morphologically confirmed as C. lectularius. Data will be analyzed descriptively, with chi-square tests examining associations between infestation and room occupancy density. This study responds to growing anecdotal reports of bed bug infestations in Nigerian university hostels and provides quantitative documentation to support institutional pest management responses.
