Forensic Examination of Mobile Phone Evidence in Kidnapping Cases in Kaduna State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Kidnapping for ransom has persisted as a significant security challenge in Kaduna State, with mobile phone communications constituting a primary evidentiary resource for forensic investigators. This study empirically examines the forensic extraction, analysis, and evidential utilisation of mobile phone evidence in kidnapping cases investigated in Kaduna State between 2020 and 2024. An analytical mixed-methods design was employed, selecting thirty prosecuted kidnapping cases with mobile phone evidence, conducting forensic re-examination of available devices using Cellebrite and Oxygen Forensic software tools, and reviewing the admissibility and impact of mobile phone evidence in trial proceedings. The study assesses the completeness of original forensic extractions, the recovery of deleted communications and location data, and the contribution of mobile phone evidence to prosecution outcomes. Findings indicate that complete mobile phone forensic examinations were performed in only forty percent of original investigations, with the remainder relying on manual phone browsing by investigators. Forensic re-examination recovered additional deleted messages and call records in twenty-two of thirty cases, and GPS location history was retrieved in fifteen cases, materially improving the evidential profile. Mobile phone evidence was cited as a decisive factor in conviction in sixty-three percent of finalised prosecution cases. Recommendations include standardised mobile phone forensic examination protocols for kidnapping investigations and the procurement of additional forensic extraction tools for the Kaduna State police command. Keywords: mobile phone forensics, kidnapping, Kaduna State, digital evidence, prosecution.
