📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
The quality of teacher-student relationships is a significant predictor of academic motivation, engagement, and achievement in secondary school settings. This study investigated the effect of teacher-student relationships on academic motivation among secondary school students in Abia State, South East Nigeria. A descriptive correlational design was used, with 400 students from ten public secondary schools in Umuahia and Aba educational zones participating. The Teacher-Student Relationship Scale (TSRS) and the Academic Motivation Scale-High School Version (AMS-HS) were administered. Data were analysed using Pearson correlation and multiple regression analysis. Findings revealed a significant positive relationship between quality teacher-student relationships and intrinsic academic motivation. Students who reported warm, respectful, and supportive relationships with their teachers demonstrated higher motivation scores and more positive attitudes toward schooling. Conversely, students describing cold, distant, or conflict-laden teacher relationships reported significantly lower academic engagement. Subject-specific teacher relationships were stronger predictors of motivation in corresponding subjects. The study concluded that improving teacher-student relational quality is a high-leverage strategy for enhancing academic motivation in Abia State schools. Recommendations included the integration of relational skills training into teacher professional development, and the use of school counsellors as mediators in teacher-student relationship conflicts. Keywords: teacher-student relationship, academic motivation, secondary school, Abia State, guidance.
